Over-the-Door Holiday Card Display

Many of us have begun to send out the single panel family photo collage in place of a holiday card.  This is often appreciated by relatives who can never get enough pictures of the kids, however there is only so much space on the fridge and these cards can't be propped up on the mantle.

My solution is something festive that can be hung over any door to add to your holiday display!  Using beautiful ribbon to create a Christmas bow, the ribbon train offers ample space to attach cards with miniature decorative clothes pins.

What You Need

  • Over-the-Door Hanger
  • Two Colors of 2 1/2" Ribbon (I used red and silver)
  • Miniature Decorative Clothes Pins
  • Thin Bendable Craft Wire

Cut 36" of the ribbon you are using for the inner bow (silver.)
Place the wire in the center of the ribbon.  Wire piece should be 12".
Make two small loops and twist the wire around the base one time to secure.
Repeat the same technique with two more loops, securing at the base by wrapping the wire.
Proceed by adding larger loops, two at a time, securing with the wire each time.
The bow should have four small loops in the center and six larger loops behind.
Leave the leftover wire in the back to secure to door hanger later.
Begin to make your second bow with the alternate color ribbon (red) by cutting 72".
Place a 12" piece of wire in the center of the ribbon.
Create a larger bow in the same way the smaller bow was fashioned, two loops at a time, securing with wire at the base each time.  This larger bow will consist of six loops that are all the same size (larger than the outer loops of the silver bow.)
Here is a picture of the completed red bow with six loops and a piece of leftover ribbon cut to the same length.  Leave the leftover wire in the back to secure to door hanger later.
Using the remaining wire on the back of the bow, secure the bow to the Over-the-Door hanger, wrapping several times.

Choosing the same ribbon as the smaller bow (silver), cut to length of about 9' (108").
Tie the ribbon around the door hanger at the center and allow to hang down as a train.

Add the small bow (silver) by securing it with the leftover wire at the back of the bow.
By puffing the loops of the bow, the hooks of the door hanger are not as noticeable.

Purchase or create your own small decorative clothes pins.  I found both the already made pins and the supplies to create your own at Michaels Craft Store.

Alternate pins on each side of the ribbon train in order to display cards.

Enjoy seeing all of your loved ones in a creative holiday display!

  1. Great idea since my fridge is stainless steel and not magnetic and tape leaves a sticky mess. Will give it a try.
