Mane Highlights for Friday December 13, 2013

Hear Me Roar!: Today God gave me a beautiful gift with a valuable lesson that was actually fun to learn!  As I ventured out to get a few Christmas items, I walked into a store and down an aisle.  There was a crowd gathered and a woman said that a raffle was going to take place in 60 seconds.  She then handed me a ticket.  I had no idea what for.  She wound up being a vendor for a big name jewelry company and I happened to be the winner of the raffle!

The lesson was certainly that no matter how much we plan, God has us where He wants us and surprises us along the way.  Imagine my surprise at walking into a raffle I didn't know was happening and getting a free ticket 60 seconds before my number was called, for a prize that could have been socks for all I knew.  This was a thankful lesson (and I'm glad it wasn't socks!)

The Reflection of the week comes from my newly published article in the Posh Seven Magazine Holiday Issue, called Combatting Consumerism.  The article reflects on how to avoid the madness of gift-giving and keep the focus on the virtue of the holiday.

Stay tuned for upcoming articles on Decorating on a Dollar, and a look at Time's Person of the Year!

How do we, as citizens of the most consumerist country in the world, turn the tide within our own circles and begin to embrace the holidays for the virtuous occasions they are intended to commemorate? Continue

Project of the Week: Over-the-Door Holiday Card Display
Many of us have begun to send out the single panel family photo collage in place of a holiday card.  This is often appreciated by relatives who can never get enough pictures of the kids, however there is only so much space on the fridge and these cards can't be propped up on the mantle.

You May Be Pregnant If: 5 Weeks to go!

This week's pregnancy moment is brought to you once again by CNN (I have got to stop watching it.)  Each year CNN does a special called "Heroes" on everyday people changing the world.  Before the show started they featured a number of touching stories of people who had near death experiences.  This video, shot a week before Christmas, is of 18-year-old Benjamin Breedlove who died on Christmas day of a heart condition he had always suffered with.  The video left his family with immense peace.

As for the Heroes special, I made it through about five minutes of the first nominee before weepingly wanting to open our home to foster children and before my husband had to put in the Star Trek movie, which elicits no dramatic emotion.

I leave you with this until next week: A Ten-Month-Old's Letter to Santa
A friend of mine sent this to me.  My husband and I laughed so hard we were in tears when we started reading it.  Considering that my keys have been missing for a week now and that our toddler likes to take things out of our bags and put them in other peoples bags...anyone who passed me in a store aisle in the past week may have gone home with them!  This list is unfortunately and surprisingly accurate.
