Today's reflection really cracked me up, mostly because it is so true. This video is a parody of the 'Dove Real Beauty Sketches.' In the actual sketches, women were brought into a room with a sketch artist who had his back to them. The women had to describe themselves to the artist as he drew them. Of course the women honed in on their flaws and the sketches wound up being beastly!
As the women were waiting to go into this room they got to know each other. After having the sketch done of themselves, the artist asked them to describe one of the other women they had met. The women described the others as far more gorgeous and flawless than they did themselves.
It was interesting in the end to compare the sketches of how each woman described herself in comparison to how another woman described her, which was always far more flattering. The exercise was meant to show women that they were perceived as more beautiful by the world then they had realized.
The comical part about this scenario is that when Dove tried the same exercise with men, they ended up with a reverse effect. The men were more likely to mention their attributes to the artist when he was sketching them, and often came out looking like Brad Pitts! On the other hand, when they described the other men they had met in the waiting room, they had very poor opinions of them.
The sketches of how men saw themselves were far better than how other men saw them. This goes to show that confidence goes a long way and in the end it is more important that you have a positive idea about yourself and are not consumed with the judgement of others.
So have a great laugh at this parody, which of course rings a little to true!
