I have been reading the classic book 'Pygmalion' by George Bernard Shaw to my son. A professor seeks to try an experiment on a poor flower girl by transforming her into a proper lady in six months time and passing her off as a duchess.
As I was doing the interview on discipline for my post this week, I got a kick out of the common language and social discipline used at the time. The professor says to the flower girl, "If you don't stop that silly whining, I'll take a broomstick to you." He later tells his housekeeper to give the girl a bath and "wallop her if she gives you trouble." Imagine a man saying this today about his children, and much less a perfect stranger!
