Mane Highlights for Friday October 4, 2013

Hear Me Roar!: The U.S. government has been shutdown for four days now with no end in sight.  This has been the headline of every newspaper, news broadcast, and radio report.  For those who are not inclined toward politics, the logistics of something like this can get pretty confusing.  I attempted to simplify the current shutdown situation in my Reflection piece for this week so that the common citizen can make sense of what is going on.  We are all effected by this, some more than others.  For my family, our one person income has been furloughed and the camping reservations we had at the beautiful Virgina National Park for this weekend have been cancelled.  Many are in similar positions.

Enjoy my collection of beautiful quotes about children, the very creative pumpkin ideas for your front porches and holiday parties, and of course the celebration of the saint of peace and poverty!

I leave you with this until next week: St. Francis of Assisi
Today is the feast day of the beloved St. Francis of Assisi.  This saint has touch Catholics and non-Catholics alike and even inspired the current Pope to choose the name Francis for his Pontificate.

The gentle and loving spirit of Francis, who gave up his wealthy life of extravagance to embrace poverty and a love of the poor embodies the true Christian path.  Francis is credited with arranging the first Christmas manger, a tradition that is still very popular with Christians to this day.  In the year 1224, Francis received the stigmata or the visible wounds of Christ (see the holes in his hands in the image above.)  The stigmata is an extremely rare spiritual gift given to extraordinarily holy people who embrace the suffering of Christ and His people.  The pain is real and described as intense (imagine the nails in His hands and feet) and often lasts for many years until the saint experiences death.

The Franciscan Friars (Order of Friars Minor) are an order of priests who follow the rule of St. Francis.  As well the Poor Clares are an order of nuns founded by St. Francis and established by St. Clare of Assisi.  There is also a third order of Franciscans for ordinary men and women who follow the ways of St. Francis in their secular lives.  The impression of this great saint has touched many throughout generations and won hearts for Christ.
