Royal Baby Buzz

The whole world waited on the edge of their seats for the birth of little prince George to be announced Monday afternoon.  The British prince will hold little more than celebrity status and a gigantic bank account ($1 Billion Inheritance), but Lord knows we love our celebrities.  Twenty-four million people tuned in to watch the wedding of George's parents; Prince William and Kate in 2011, which was declared a public holiday.  They wanted to see the $66,500 dress worn by Kate, the color the Queen would wear, how Pippa and Prince Harry looked together walking down the aisle, who was and wasn't on the guest list, and of course the many eccentric hats.  I must admit that I even watched a rerun of the ceremony, mostly because I was not staying up until 2:00 am to watch it live.

Celebrity fascination as well as royal fascination seems to be dominated (almost double) by women than that of men, who wonder if it is anything more than a repressed Disney fantasy.  Every little girl certainly desires to be a princess because that means you are special, wear beautiful dresses all day, and get to marry a prince!  Women also seem to compare themselves more to others and therefore are more easily caught up in celebrity fads and escapism through posh lifestyles.

The birth of Prince George is a glorious and special occasion, not because he is a prince but rather because he is a baby!  It is wonderful to see so many people across the world celebrating a birth together.  His royal status tends to make Americans and others who seceded from the oppressive British Monarchy uncomfortable, as if celebrating his birth undoes our years of separation and insults our forefathers.

We must take care not to fall into the lure of escapism when celebrating glorious life events and not to reduce our appreciation of weddings and births in our own humble lives, remembering that God celebrates each and every birth with His whole heavenly host!

  1. You are right. Every baby is special and their births should be celebrated by all the people they touch.
