These covers can be used for any age until potty training is complete. There are so many reasons to use cloth (cheaper, no diaper rashes or redness, hold leaks better, no chemicals, reusable, faster potty-training, environment...)
What You Need
- Waterproof PUL Fabric
- 3/4" Cotton Swimwear Elastic
- Babyville Boutique EZ Adjust Tape (1 1/2")
- Babyville Boutique EZ Adjust Tabs
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape
- Sewing Machine
*Note: These measurements are for a baby with roughly an 18" waist. Be sure to adjust width for larger/smaller children.
Cut a 21" x 10" rectangle of the PUL Fabric.
Fold the edge over the elastic in between the two pins. Stretch the elastic and secure with pins. Sew a double seam, pulling the elastic taut as you sew. Do the same on both sides of the rectangular piece.
Cut a 6" strip of the swimwear elastic. This will be inserted under the 1 1/2" flap shown above in order to make this area between the Velcro Tabs stretchy. Pull the elastic and pin. Sew a double seam securing the elastic along the top.
On the opposite end of the diaper cover you will attach a Velcro strip that is compatible with the Velcro Tabs sewn onto the other end.
Fold over the 1 1/2" flap as you did on the opposite end of the diaper cover. Then on the outside (pattern side) of the fabric, pin the strip of Velcro, leaving space on both sides and a small space on the top so as not to rub against baby's skin.
Sew the Velcro strip onto the diaper cover on the two sides and along the top. I did not sew along the bottom of the strip in order to utilize the inside flap for tucking in the insert (below.)
This is an image of the inside of the diaper cover. A cloth insert is tucked into both flaps.
Use these with store bought or home made cloth inserts
Love the pattern. So colorful and fun - too bad it is covered up. Looks so comfortable too.
